Austria Uncovered

Trains, Trails, and Culinary Tales

My travel tales often span continents and cultures, but few journeys have etched themselves into my memory quite like Austria. This charming European country, where scenic beauty meets historical richness and culinary delights, holds a unique place in my heart.

The journey began in the vibrant city of Vienna. Right from the scenic train ride from the airport, I was welcomed by the country's picturesque landscapes and bustling city areas. As the cityscapes rolled by, I was filled with anticipation for the adventure that lay ahead.

The heart of Vienna offered a culinary revelation - the world-famous Wiener Schnitzel. This crispy, juicy delight, paired with a squeeze of fresh lemon, was not just a meal but an experience. Each bite carried the legacy of Austrian cuisine and the city's culinary artistry. I believe I had it three times in the short span there.

Known for its historic coffee culture, Vienna offered me the opportunity to relax in numerous coffee shops, each one a haven of aromatic warmth amidst the bustling streets. Among these, Café Central, a historical venue with an ambiance as rich as its coffee, stood out. It was like stepping back in time while savoring a hot cup of perfectly brewed coffee with my now wife.

A modern culinary surprise was Klyo by the Donaukanal. This chic eatery, perfect for brunch or a quick bite, served a tantalizing menu amidst sleek, contemporary decor. On the other side of the spectrum was Schwedenplatz, an area filled with diverse food options, including the must-have Manner wafer, a delicious testament to Austria's sweet traditions.

The week in Vienna was made even more comfortable by the warm hospitality of the Vienna Marriott Hotel overlooking the gorgeous Stadtpark. Its stunning interiors and top-notch service turned it into my home away from home.

One of the quiter days, I sneaked away to check out some history. The Flakturm, or anti-aircraft towers, stood as stark reminders of the nation's past. These massive concrete structures, relics of World War II, were intriguing symbols of the city's historical backdrop.

Our stay in St. Anton was marked by the unmatched hospitality of the owners of Hotel Rosa Canina. Their attention to every detail made our stay a heartwarming experience that far exceeded our expectations, and if you ever make it out there, tell Philipp his cooking is topnotch!

After our exhilarating days on the slopes, the unexpected gem of our Austrian adventure was discovered in Anthony's Pizza. Their delicious pizza, with its perfect crust and generous toppings, was the comfort food we didn't know we needed. The mountain views, the crisp air, and a hot pizza – it was the perfect after-ski experience.
